Local Soccer Team Wins State Cup

Coast Futbol Alliance team, 97 Black, won the South Carolina Youth Soccer Association's state championship this past weekend in impressive fashion. The team competed in the Under 14 Classic division, and played the Lakeland Toros Soccer Club from Greenwood, SC in the final match. The game was won by Coast FA 4-0. The team only allowed 1 goal the duration of the tournament. Playing in South Carolina's Presidents Medal Soccer League the team finished with an 11-0-2 record scoring 49 goals and only allowing 3 goals all season.

The Coast 97 Black team is coached by Bethuel 'China' Maja, a former South African international and professional player. 'China' , who attend Coastal Carolina University, played soccer for the Chants from 2003 to 2005. Among Coach Maja's achievements, being named MVP of the Junior World Cup in 1998, while playing for his country.

The tournament win qualifies the team from Coast FA for a spot in the US Region III tournament, where they will compete against 11 other state champions in Greensboro, NC on June 7-10. A tournament win in Greensboro would qualify them for the National Championship held in Sacramento, CA.
