Breast Cancer in the U.S.

By Health Day

Important news for women today A brand new analysis of breast cancer cases in the U.S. finds what could be a concerning trend.

The study, just published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, looked at records gathered between 1973 and 2009.

The researchers tracked breast cancer cases, trends and survival rates and found a small, yet significant increase in advanced breast cancer in young women between the ages of 25 and 39.

In this age group, the incidence of breast cancer that had spread to distant organs rose from about one and a half cases per 100-thousand women in 1976 to nearly 3 cases per 100-thousand in 2009.

No other age group showed a similar increase.

The researchers say this is worrisome because young women with breast cancer tend to have more aggressive disease and lower survival rates.

They are calling for additional study to corroborate their findings and identify potential causes.
