Children and Summer Safety

By Health Day

Each year ERs across the U.S. tend to more than 500,000 cases of accident-driven traumatic brain injury involving children below the age of 15. Here is some important advice for parents on how to minimize risk when their children are at play.

Experts, including the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Stony Brook University Children's Hospital in New York, agree that for kids who bike, skateboard, scooter, or ride horses, helmets are essential gear. And because playgrounds are the scene of roughly 200,000 pediatric injuries each year- parents should choose settings that feature relatively loose surfaces.

Stony Brook's doc says falling on mulch, pea gravel, or crushed stone is definitely preferable to falling on concrete, asphalt, or even hard grass or soil.

Adult supervision is always critical when kids go poolside- particularly with older teens who may unwisely decide to mix parties, alcohol and a body of water.

And finally adult supervision is also important whenever children engage in organized sports as the risk for concussions is there even when helmets are used.
