Hamper Dangers

By Health Day

An important warning for parents about the potential dangers of collapsible cloth and wire hampers.

These popular hampers can cause serious eye damage, according to doctors at the Chicago Eye and Ear Infirmary

Within a 12-month period, they treated two children who had penetrating eye injuries after they fell on exposed wires from the hampers. Both children suffered eye lacerations, as well as retinal complications.

Collapsible cloth hampers have a stiff spring embedded in them...but when the hamper is damaged and the wire breaks through the cloth, it poses a risk.

And while these kinds of eye injuries are relatively rare, they can result in vision-threatening complications.

So parents, if you see fraying and an exposed wire, spring for a new hamper for the safety of your kids.
